How to enter
- Send your entries (maximum five per month) with your name, address and contact details to gallery@getaway.co.za.
- Give your photograph a title and write a short paragraph (no more than 100 words) on how and where you took it.
- Each entry must be accompanied by the camera make, model, lens and any other applicable information (flash, beanbag, etc.).
- Edited images must be about 1MB. If you qualify for publication, we’ll contact you for a high-resolution version (A3 at 300 dpi is ideal).

Yes, non-residents may enter as long as the images were taken in African or its islands. Prizes will only be sent within SA.

Almost all professional photos are edited to some degree. It is, however, taken into account when judging.

The size of the photo submitted is not clear, especially if they should be emailed to you! I note in your magazine that it states that they must be about 1MB. Photos which I submit to our photo club and Salons specifies they cannot be more than 500kb, please advise what is acceptable.

Submitted photographs should have a file size of around 1MB. This should be sufficient to judge without overloading our servers.

Hi there is a copyright watermarked photo allowed to be submitted for judging? Just want to know cos iv never entered a comp b4 and while I am by no means a professional, I do take my photography quite seriously and as suchb all the photos I have taken an uploaded onto the web have a watermark for publicity and for anti theft lol.

You can enter photos with a watermark. If you image is selected we are going to need the photo is a higher res without the watermark. But for the inital judging it is not a problem.

Hi, I see that photos are judged according to editorial content. does this mean that a photo taken in, for example our back garden, is not acceptable even if it has potential. I suppose I am asking whether we have to be in some local exotic place for our photo to be accepted?

Hi Andrew. By editorial content, we are referring to travel and wildlife genres. In fact, previous winners have taken images in their back garden. Best of luck…

I entered more than 5 entries for the magazine cover competition. I wasn’t aware that there was a limit. Does the limit apply to entries for that competition as well as the regular photography monthly competition?
I’d like to enter monthly pictures to the magazine starting this month. Do those I’ve entered into the “magazine cover” competition use up my monthly 5 allowance?

You are more than welcome to edit the photos. We favour natural looking scenes or objects so the amount of retouching is at your discretion.

Do the photo’s have to be taken with a Canon?? I love photography, but only have a Sony TSC-T5…..I would really love to enter, but do not have enough money to buy a Canon.

Is there a required theme for the photos? A prefered kind of photo? Nature/outdoor etc?

There is no particular theme requried for the photos. If you browse through the previous winners photos you will notice they were judges purely on the photgrpahers technical and artistic merits. We favour natural-looking scenes or subjects which have something in common with our editorial subject matter. Only photographs taken in Africa and its islands will be considered.

When are the cut off dates for the monthly publications?

There is no specific cut off date each month. The photos that come in are judged in bacthes. Should your submission be received when the current batch of photos is being judged your photo will then only be judged with the following months photos. This competition is ongoing until December 2013 when the final judging takes place.

Where can I find the specific terms and conditions for this competition … most notably, the rights that Getaway would have to the photos entered. I’m very keen to enter, however, the terms and conditions of some of your other photographic competitions worry me as they ask for exclusive rights to the photos and the right to sub-licence them without compensation to photographers. Is it the same for this competition? I have no problem with Getaway using my photos in their mags, website, FB page and even in their books for no extra compensation, but I can’t give them EXCLUSIVE rights and if they are selling on to third parties, I expect to be contacted asked and get a commission on the sale. Please advise as I find no specific T&C’s for this comp.
